About Department

Established in 1988-89, the Department of English is one of the oldest departments of the College. Over the years, the Department has evolved as an example of excellence and perseverance, closely engaging with students on issues of race, gender, caste, class, religion, identity and the politics of language, amongst others. Adopting an interdisciplinary approach, the Department focuses on helping students develop critical and analytical abilities, while initiating them into the academic reading-writing space through the prescribed syllabi which incorporates literature in English from around the world. The Department mentors students in creative writing, translation praxis, academic paper presentations and encourages them to co-relate theory, critical application and social responsibility. The interactive and collaborative nature of the classes is meant to encourage self-expression, a spirit of inquiry, while assisting students in developing a voice of their own. Taking classroom learning a step ahead through students’ involvement in a myriad of events regularly organised by the English Literary Association, the Department helps its students gain exposure to experts and build teamwork skills.

The Department offers various Discipline Specific Elective (DSE), Skill Enhancement Courses (SEC), AECC and General Elective courses to undergraduate students. The faculties associated with the Department engage with academic research and effective teaching methodology, participating regularly in nationally and internationally organised conferences, seminars and workshops. More than 80% of the faculty members are PhD holders and have published books and papers in various academic fields. Additionally, since many of them are members of the University’s Curriculum Planning Committee, they remain actively involved in syllabus designing and its implementation.
