As per the orders issued by the Supreme Court of India and further notified by the University Grant
Commission (UGC) in November 2014, the subject of Environmental Studies was introduced as a
qualifying and compulsory course for the Ist year students of all the under graduate courses under
University of Delhi. The CBCS (Choice Based Credit System) undergraduate courses introduced by the
University of Delhi in 2016 provisioned Environmental Science to be taught under Ability
Enhancement Compulsory Course (AECC). Hence, EVS became a compulsory course for all the
students enrolled at the University for Undergraduate Programs with a credit weightage of 4.
The main objective of the course is to enable students to have a more environment sensitive and
conscious approach towards nature. The course also encourages them to have action based,
sustainable and proactive involvement in their day to day interaction with nature. The human
cultural footprints have always had the power to solve the global environmental issues and it is
important to have a youth that is preservation oriented and development centric in an
environmental friendly manner.
The aim of the paper is to create environmental awareness among the young adults of the nation.
The course inculcates amongst students, accountability and respect towards the natural resources.
By the end of the course students are able to assess and gauge the global and national
environmental problems with a viable and everlasting solution.
